Shedding Some Light on Lingerie

How do you find the most comfortable bra to suit your needs? How do you care for your underwear so that it lasts and continues to look its very best?

What you'll need: a measuring tape and an unlined or lightly padded bra.

How to Measure Your Bra Size

Step 1: Circumference of Your Bust

Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust without pulling it too tight. Make sure that the measuring tape is straight across your back. Note down the measurement in inches and round up if you're between sizes.

Step 2: Circumference of the Band Under Your Bust

Wrap the measuring tape around your ribcage, under the bust, without pulling it too tight. The measuring tape should remain parallel to the ground and hug your body. If the measurement is an odd number, round up (e.g., 35 inches = 36 inches). This measurement is your band size.

Step 3: Final Calculation

Subtract the result of step 2 from that of step 1. The difference between the circumference of the bust (measurement 1) and the circumference of the band (measurement 2) determines your cup size.

To find out what that is, refer to the following table.

FAQ | A Closer Look at Lingerie

What is a bra cup?

The cup is the part of the bra that covers and supports the breast. The letter associated with each bra size refers to the cup's depth.

How do you know if you're wearing the right bra size?

The cup should perfectly hug the shape of the breast. If the breast spills out of the cup, you should try a larger cup size (e.g., a D instead of a C). If, on the contrary, there are gaps and empty spaces to fill, you should try a smaller cup size.

How can you be sure your bra fits properly?

The bra's straps shouldn't slide off your shoulders or dig into your skin. Additionally, the bra band shouldn't ride up in the back. If this happens, tighten the bra by using the next set of hooks or try a smaller band size (e.g., 34 instead of 36).

How often should you replace your bra?

It's advisable to replace your favourite styles every 6 to 12 months, depending on how frequently you wear them. Changing your bra is recommended at the slightest sign of discomfort or wear (e.g., underwire that pokes through the lining).

Can you wear the same bra several days in a row?

It's not recommended to wear the same bra two days in a row. Its fibres need 24 hours to rest and return to their initial shape to provide you with optimal support.

How do you extend the life of your bra?

As often as you can, try to buy a bra that you're able to attach using the hooks at the very end of the band. Over time, the band will stretch, and you can then tighten it as much as possible.

How to Care for Your Bras

You can machine wash bras by taking certain precautions:

- Fasten the hooks.
- Fold the bra in two without crushing the cups.
- Use a protective mesh bag.
- Set the machine on delicate cycle and wash in cold water.
